About the CVAD Galleries at UNT

The CVAD Art Galleries at UNT support the educational mission of the university, enrich the aesthetic environment and serve as a cultural resource for the public. They are made up of three gallery spaces; the CVAD Gallery, Cora Stafford Gallery, and the Paul Voertman Gallery.

Each of the three galleries inspires and empowers student and community audiences through the viewing experience, fosters students' confidence in the public display of their artworks and designs, and presents and promotes the artist’s and designer’s voices.

Mission

The CVAD Galleries are a nexus for the College of Visual Arts and Design at the University of North Texas, a Tier One research university by the Carnegie Classification — and one of only 16 R1s that is a Hispanic-Serving Institution. As such, the galleries provide the college, university, and community opportunities for direct involvement and exchange with the visual arts and design through exhibitions, programming, and object study, while cultivating an environment that nurtures creativity and intellectual growth.

Vision

In their focus on art and design, the CVAD Galleries promote new ways of inspiring and engaging students and the university community to foster pedagogical practice built on curricular needs and research.

Values and Goals

Equity and Inclusion: The CVAD Galleries are dedicated to excellence in diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion. We promote artistic and intellectual freedom by fostering environments that value everyone and provide all community members with a respectful and to address divergent opinions and ideas.

  • Moving forward, the exhibition schedule will place diverse voices at the forefront. To that end, the galleries will make the commitment to focus a minimum of one of the three main exhibitions a year on artist(s) and/or designer(s) from systematically marginalized groups.

Academic engagement: Experimentation and interpretation are integral parts of programmatic planning, resulting in the CVAD Galleries serving as a space to explore art in its historical, cultural, and social contexts and enrich the understanding of art and design's contributions to civilization. The CVAD Galleries engage with diverse fields of study within CVAD, UNT, and broader academic communities to inspire and empower student and community audiences. As such, we create engaging exhibitions, offer research opportunities, and foster students' confidence in presenting their artwork as well as curatorial and research projects.

Social engagement: The CVAD Galleries value fluidity and adaptability to reflect the changing world around us. The Galleries are in a constant and healthy state of flux as they are mutually constituted through their reciprocal engagement with artists, designers, communities, and the world at large. Change is necessary and desirable.

Accessibility: The CVAD Galleries ensure our communities' intellectual and strategic physical access to collection holdings, exhibitions, and programming.

Professionalism: The CVAD Galleries responsibly steward the Galleries' three spaces for the entire College of Visual Arts and Design by following and expanding upon established best practices for producing, curating, interpreting, and presenting art and design in all its manifestations.
